Mike Johnson hasn’t matched Kevin McCarthy’s fundraising prowess — yet

House Speaker Mike Johnson followed his first major legislative victories with a private plea to the billionaire donors who fund Republican House campaigns: Give us more money.

The Louisiana Republican jumped on a call on Wednesday — as President Biden was signing into law a package of bills on Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan and TikTok that Johnson muscled through the House — with some of his party’s biggest donors and their advisers to declare that his recent work had shown “we can make tough choices” and “put together coalitions to win votes,” according to multiple people familiar with his comments on the call, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to detail the private remarks.
